Getting cited by AI is the new page one

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot: more and more customers ask an AI instead of scrolling through ten links. If the AIs don't know you, for those customers you don't exist. AI SEO (also known as GEO, Generative Engine Optimization) is about becoming the source the AIs choose to cite.

What's happening, in brief

1bn+people use Google AI Mode; AI Overviews appear on roughly half of all searches
92%of AI referral traffic comes from ChatGPT: if you're cited there, you get visited
<1%average CTR from AI answers to sites NOT cited as a source: you're either in, or invisible

The consequence is simple: classic rankings are still necessary, but no longer sufficient. Your content needs to be understandable, verifiable and citable by generative engines.

What I actually do

Citable content

AIs cite sources that answer directly, with data, clear definitions and a clean structure. I rewrite your key pages in the format generative engines extract best: answer first, detail after.

Complete structured data

Schema.org on everything that matters — organisation, services, FAQs, articles, reviews. It's the most reliable way to tell machines who you are and what you're about.

Verifiable authority

AIs favour sources with an identifiable author, demonstrated experience and consistency across pages. I build the E-E-A-T signals: author pages, references, case studies with real numbers.

Access for AI crawlers

I check that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended can read your site (or are blocked, if that's a deliberate choice): many sites are invisible to AI because of a misconfigured robots.txt.

FAQs and conversational queries

AI searches are questions in natural language. I map the real questions your customers ask and build answers with FAQ markup — the most cited format of all.

Citation monitoring

Periodic checks on how ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews answer the questions in your sector: who they cite, what they say about you, where you're missing. With a readable report.

Honest questions about AI SEO

Is classic SEO dead?
No. AIs draw their sources largely from the same search indexes: without solid SEO foundations there's no AI citation either. AI SEO is an extra layer, not a replacement.
Is the llms.txt file worth it?
In June 2026 Google confirmed that llms.txt has no effect on ranking, and the major AI providers don't use it. You can add one (it costs nothing), but anyone selling it to you as "the key to AI SEO" is selling you smoke. What works is citable content, structured data and authority.
Can you guarantee a citation in ChatGPT?
No, just as nobody can guarantee the top spot on Google. What you can do is systematically raise the probability of being cited — and that's measurable over time through monitoring.
Does it make sense for a small business?
Often more than for a large one: in niches and local markets the AIs have few good sources to cite. An SME with excellent content can become THE source in its sector far more easily than it could ever climb the national SERPs.
